Evaluation Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In our music video we used, developed and challenged the forms and conventions of traditional indie folk music videos.

Both my digipak and Magazine advert also challenge and develop the forms and conventions of real media products.

Starting with my digipak, the cover develops the traditional nature theme of a folk genre digipak by using images of trees and using natural lighting - both are natural and give the digipak an earthy natural feel which is often used for media products with a folk theme.

However when comparing my Digipak with that of Noah and the Whale you can see that I have also challenged the conventional norms of a folk genre digipak. One way in which I have challenged the conventions is that instead of using an image that has basic to little editing, I have embossed my digipak to make it seem more like it was sketched - I did this to make it stand out from the usual forms of folk genre digipaks (I thought if it looked slightly different to the norm, it would stand making it more eye-catching for my audience). Another way in which I challenged the traditional convention of a folk digipak is by me not using the entire band within the photography. I chose to not use the entire band or have a focus on one band member as I wanted my digipak to focus on the theme of nature: I still included band members as I wanted them to have a prescence so it's not entirely lost that this is an indie folk group product.

The inside of my digipak also uses and challenges the forms and conventions of real media products as seen when compared to the above Mumford and Sons digipak.
My product uses a similar convention of having the inside simple (as in minimal amounts of writing, with a focus on the imagerey used), I did this as I wanted the focus to be on the images I photographed and edited.
When compared to the Mumford and Sons digipak it is also challenging the normal conventions as on the inside my focus is solely focussed on nature and trees whereas in the Mumford and Sons digipak it uses images of the band.

I believe my magazine advert mainly uses and develops the conventions of existing media products however it still challenges the norm in some aspects.
It uses the convention of photography with natural lighting which fits in with being outside and in nature. One other convention that my Magazine advert uses is that the text matches that used for the digipak, I did this so that people can realise the two are linked and know what to look for.

The way I challenged the forms and conventions of existing Magazine adverts is that I did not use the digipak cover image as the background for the magazine advert, though I then used this to develop my Magazine advert further, I decided to use an image that looks quite nature-like and prominent so that it stands out more. I still included the digipak cover so that the audience knows what the digipak looks like, so they know what to search for on the shelves in stores such as HMV.
